In 1869, Sr. Mary Fitzgibbons, a Sister of Charity in New York City, heard a cry outside the door of the convent. When she opened the door, there was an abandoned baby which she immediately took in. Word spread that the sisters would care for these babies, and they were soon overwhelmed with “Foundlings” on their doorstep.

One morning as the sisters were praying the rosary on the Staten Island Ferry, a Catholic businessman, Charles Schwab, the CEO of Bethlehem Steel, was touched by their devotion. He approached them and offered to make a donation to their cause. His donation turned out to be his Staten Island summer Estate on the Raritan Bay.

The very first night the sisters moved into the new location they found a baby on their doorstep. The baby had a heartbreaking note attached to him: “Please name him Joseph.”

They indeed named him Joseph, and they named their new branch of the Foundling Home St. Joseph by-the-Sea.

We remember that one of the titles of St. Joseph is Pillar of Families.

We established the Pillar Fund to provide scholarships and financial aid to current and future students to ensure that Catholic Education affordable for Sea Families.

” I wanted to attend St. Joseph by the Sea the second I left my first open house tour, and my feelings never changed. It was my dream. The only problem was that I always knew I wouldn’t be able to attend without financial assistance.

Flash forward a few years, it’s me now! I’m a sophomore at St. Joseph by the Sea High School, growing spiritually, academically, athletically, and socially. It wasn’t just a fantasy, I love my school. I really do. I’m at the top of my class, being prepared for my future, I am making memories that will last me a lifetime.

Thank you for your generosity. If it wasn’t for you I wouldn’t be here at St. Joseph by the Sea High School. I hope that one day I’ll be able to give back and help students who are just like me attend their dream school. Thank you for your support. “
